Point au Sable Nature Reserve

Point au Sauble, Brown County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Open Water, Hardwood Swamp, Southern Hardwood Forest, Beaches and Mudflats.

Best Birds: The small trails that enter the Hardwood Swamp to the south from Point Lane are accessible and host a Red-headed Woodpecker colony among common forest species. These trails are excellent for migrant warblers, thrushes, and vireos. During dry years, the north shore of the peninsula to the tip can be reached by trails, but in wet years waders are required.

The small neighborhood including Point Lane, Web Road, Lloyd Street, Agamaite Road, and Grove Road is often birdy with migrants in the spring and finches in the winter. Feeders in front yards should always be checked. The small boat ramp at the end of Lloyd Street offers a good view north into the bay, and diving waterfowl including scoters, grebes, and loons can be viewed here in migration. Caspian and Common Tern are often seen hunting. When water on the Bay is low, exposed sand and mud shoals produce modest numbers of shorebirds.

A restoration effort is underway at the end of Circle Ridge Road, which is just south of County Highway K. This promises to attract grassland and savanna species in the future.

Directions: Exit State Highway 57 to the east on County Road K and proceed 1.0 miles to Nicolet Drive (County Road A). Turn north and in 0.3 miles Point Lane will be on the left.   Point au Sable is a patchwork of private parcels and UW-Green Bay preserve, but access is possible to some of the best areas without special permission.  Parking for visitors is possible along Point Lane, where trails loop through the lowland hardwood forest near the central and western part of the tract. Access to the Sedge Meadow Tract is possible through the wet forest / shrub woodland south of the trail.
