Ken Euers Nature Area

Ken Euers Wetland Preserve, Brown County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Marsh, Open Water, Beaches and Mudflats, Non-native Grassland and Pasture.

Best Birds: The impoundments to the east and west of the parking lot both have high numbers of dabbling ducks and nesting marshbirds including Common Gallinule, Pied-billed Grebe, Yellow-headed Blackbird, and rails. These locations are easily accessible by the dikes that skirt the edges of the impoundments. When water levels are appropriate and the seiche (the wind-driven tide) is out, vast mudflats are often exposed in the Bay to the north of the parking lot, which attract shorebirds in sometimes excellent numbers. Ducks, herons including Black-crowned Night-Herons, and Great Egrets are abundant in this area. To view Atkinson Marsh and the Duck Creek delta with a scope, walk the dike west of the parking lot past the 90-degree turn to the south and then scan to the west. Marshbirds including Forster’s Tern and Least Bittern breed in this area and shorebird and duck variety is often high. The shrubs and trees along the dikes act as migrant traps for passerines. The entrance road is also excellent for migrants, particularly sparrows.

Directions: Exit Interstate 43 at the Atkinson Road exit and follow Hurlbut Street 1.1 miles east from Atkinson Drive to the stop sign at Military Avenue and turn north. Take the gravel road to the end and turn into the parking lot.
