Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, Brown County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot
Habitat: Southern Hardwoods, Hardwood Swamp.
Best Birds: Bay Beach is one of the premier sites for viewing warblers and other passerines in spring and fall migration. Variety and numbers of warblers can be phenomenal in May, as well as the views when they are low to the ground during colder temperatures. Prothonotary Warbler and Cerulean Warbler are annual. Swainson’s and Gray-cheeked Thrush are sometimes abundant. Make sure not to ignore the lagoons as they can attract a variety of dabbling and diving ducks, Snowy Egret, and other uncommon species. The mowed field to the north of East Shore Drive sometimes has shorebirds after heavy rains and during low water levels, the shore of the Bay can have shorebird habitat near and at the amusement park.
Directions: Exit Interstate 43 at the Webster Avenue exit and proceed north on Irvin Avenue. Turn east on East Shore Drive and the entrance is on the right after the pond. Park in the first lot (just after the entrance gate) and walk the paved road toward the nature center, and then past the nature center and to the east. In addition to the paved gated road, the Hussong Trail and Chipmunk Trail boardwalk are typically excellent and the Woodchuck Trail is often worth the walk as well.
