Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L159725

Habitat: Marsh, Willow, Alder or Dogwood Swamp, Hardwood Swamp, Southern Hardwood Forest.

Best Birds: The large swaths of forest (especially south of Lineville Rd) offer opportunities to find breeding Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Barred Owl, Yellow-throated Vireo, and Brown Creeper. Areas of alder swamp (especially north of Lineville Rd) occasionally host some of the southernmost breeding Golden-winged Warbler in the state, as well as Winter Wren, Mourning Warbler, and Northern Waterthrush. This is the last known location in the county where it is still possible to find Ruffed Grouse, although numbers are decreasing. Walking Lineville Road itself can be fantastic for migrants, and you will hear the songs of breeding Willow Flycatcher and Wood Thrush

The impoundments along the small auto tour and trails should not be overlooked as they have yielded uncommon species of ducks with the common dabbling and diving ducks in spring.

Directions: Exit US Highway 41/141 at Lineville Road and proceed east for 0.3 miles to Lakeview Drive. Barkhausen offers a variety of trails through marsh and hardwood forest from the Nature/Interpretive Center parking area (44.597241, -88.038874) and north and south of smaller parking areas and trailheads on Lineville Road (44.59170, -88.02653). Turn north on Lakeview Drive to the Nature/Interpretive Center or continue straight on Lineville Road.
