Habitat: Mixed Coniferous Forest, Boreal Forest, Conifer Bog, Open Water.
Best Birds: This site lies amid the most boreal portion of Bayfield County and features conifer lowlands that provide the highest likelihood of northern species such as Spruce Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, Canada Jay, and Boreal Chickadee. Unfortunately, all of these species have declined in Wisconsin in recent decades and are thus now difficult to find in the region. Along the road and in adjacent forest and muskeg, look for these and other northern birds like Merlin, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Blue-headed Vireo, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Brown Creeper, Purple Finch, Lincoln’s Sparrow, and Canada, Cape May, and Magnolia Warbler.
The lake, which provides good opportunity for boating or paddling, may hold breeding Trumpeter Swan, Ring-necked Duck, Common Loon, and during migration a wide variety of ducks. Winter visitors may find Northern Goshawk, Red and White-winged Crossbill, Common Redpoll, or one of the four rare residents mentioned to start this account.
Directions: 41 miles south of Ashland. Six miles west of the town of Clam Lake turn north onto Forest Road 341. Go 0.5 miles to Chippewa Landing Rd. and turn east. Follow this dirt road just over 1 mile to the boat landing (46.19960, -90.99018).
