Thompson’s West End Park

https://ebird.org/wi/hotspot/L271585

Habitat:  Open Water, Beaches and Mudflats, Upland Shrub, Urban/Residential/Industrial (campground).

Best Birds:  Scan the water from shore for waterfowl, shorebirds, gulls, terns, and swallows, especially during migration. Tundra Swan, Cackling Goose, all three merganser species, scoters, and Long-tailed Duck, Horned and Red-necked Grebes, and Common Loon may be found among more common species. Large numbers of Common Tern and Bonaparte’s Gull are sometimes present in May, as well as Willet, Black-bellied Plover, and occasionally Whimbrel. Bald Eagle and River Otter are commonly spotted.

Walk the campground for Harris’s and other sparrows, Snow Bunting, or White-winged Crossbill. A trailhead at the east end of the park near the boat launch leads to a nice hike with land birding opportunities in upland shrub and forest edge habitat. Rarities are frequently encountered at this site, recently including Franklin’s Gull, Tropical Kingbird, Black-billed Magpie, and Sage Thrasher, among others.

Directions:  10 miles north of Ashland. From downtown Washburn, take 8th Avenue West south from Highway 13 for 0.3 miles to the park entrance (46.66501, -90.90601).
