Habitat:  Mixed Coniferous Forest, Marsh, Alder Swamp, Open Water.

Best Birds: From the fish hatchery parking lot, walk between the buildings to the fish ponds. Occasionally geese, ducks, and herons are found here but the main attraction is often low-foraging warblers during spring migration, including Canada, Mourning, Cape May, Wilson’s. Opposite the hatchery on the east side of the highway is the Salmo trail, which leads through shrub swamp, emergent marsh, and eventually the lakeshore. Many of the same species may be found but also American Bittern, Sora, and during migration Lincoln’s Sparrow, Rusty Blackbird, and various duck species both in the marsh and offshore.

Directions:  20 miles north of Ashland. Along Highway 13 about 2.3 miles south of Bayfield. Park in the paved lot on the west side of the highway for the hatchery trail (46.78648, -90.86287) and at the gravel lot on the east side for the Salmo trail.
