Lawrence Creek State Natural Area

Habitat: Native and Restored Grasslands, Black Oak Forest, and Jack Pine – Oak Barrens, Non-Native Grassland.

Best Birds: Grassland birds present here are Eastern Kingbird, Clay-colored, Vesper, Grasshopper and Henslow’s Sparrow. In the oak forest you will find Eastern Whip-poor-will, Least Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo, Orchard Oriole, and Mourning WarblerBlack-billed Cuckoo, Red-headed Woodpecker, Eastern Towhee, Field Sparrow and Blue-winged Warbler are found in the oak barrens.

Directions: 70 miles N of madison/7 miles west of Westfield. Go west on CTH E for six and a half miles, then head north on 2nd Ave for one mile to parking area on the right at the junction with Eagle Ave. Hike the field lane north into the State Natural Area.

Site Address & Additional Information:

The State Natural Area is 288 acres within the larger Lawrence Creek Fish and Wildlife Area (961 acres). The lane heading north from the parking lot leads to a grassland on flat terrain, then to the oak forest and barrens on gently rolling terrain. Non-Native Grassland on private lands to the west expands the overall habitat area for grassland birds.
