Dells of the Wisconsin River – Witches Gulch

Habitat: Roughly 160 acres of mature Mixed Coniferous Forest leading to a steep gorge with tall Sandstone Cliffs and a stand of Hemlock-Hardwood Forest. The area is bound on the west by the Wisconsin River and on the north by Witches Gulch.

Best Birds: Representative species of the mixed forest are Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Barred Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Wood Thrush, Hooded and Pine Warbler, and Scarlet Tanager

Blue-headed Vireo, and Blackburnian and Black-throated Green Warbler are found in the stand of hemlocks near Gulch Creek.

Directions: 58 miles NNW of madison/Three and a half miles north of Wisconsin Dells on River Road. Park at the Dells of the Wisconsin River parking lot on west side of River Road. There is a trail that leaves from this parking lot heading north to a junction that forms a loop trail through the area.
