March 26 or April 2 – Dane and Columbia County Ponds – The date will be selected several days before the field trip (based on weather and ice conditions), and participants will be notified. This will be our annual driving tour of this productive waterfowl area, when we often expect to see Tundra Swan, Greater White-fronted, Snow, Ross’s, and Cackling Geese. A wide variety of ducks will also be expected, along with other early to mid-spring migrants, and possibly a few shorebirds. We often finish this field trip with a walk on the trails at the Rowan Creek State Fishery area for Tufted Titmouse and other passerines. It’s usually chilly on this early-spring outing, so a winter parka, long underwear, hat and gloves are often a good idea. This trip will start at 7:00 AM and usually finish before noon.
