The Art of Field Guide Illustration lecture is a must for anyone who has a love of nature field guides and art. Learn behind the scenes efforts needed to create successful artistic field guides.

Nature field guides help us to identify things that we're looking at and provide a standardized way of labeling nature, but have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes to create these field guides? Thomas Schultz will share personal insights about how the illustrations in these books are created -- in this case for bird guides. Thomas has been studying and painting birds for over 40 years. In 1981 he was invited to work on a new bird book that was being undertaken by National Geographic -- to be called "Field Guide to the Birds of North America".

Many of his illustrations have been contracted by the National Geographic Society, the Smithsonian Institution, the Houghton Mifflin Company (for the Warblers field guide in their Peterson Series), and other publications.

Tom is an active birder with a strong interest in field identification – which is an outgrowth of his bird illustration work. He is actively involved with the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology – recently as president – and also serves as field trip coordinator.
