Engel Conservation Area

Habitat: 155 acres with Oak-Hickory Forest, Bottomland Hardwoods, Restored Grassland, and Marsh.

Best Birds: Listen for Wilson’s Snipe in the marsh, and Hooded Merganser and Pied-billed Grebe in the deeper pools. Marsh Wren and Swamp Sparrow skulk along the dike.  Look for Brown Thrasher along the edges.  Forest species include Great-Horned Owl and Wood Thrush.

Directions: 24 miles SW of Milwaukee. Entrance located on Henneberry Drive, 5 miles south of I-43, in the city of Muskego.  A gravel drive leads to a paved parking lot, 42.87811, -88.16005. The park has over 3 miles of well-maintained trails, all meeting at the paved parking lot.  Recent raising of the north dike in 2021 makes for dry walking year-round.
