Powell Marsh SWA

Habitat: Open Water, Marsh, Mudflats, Willow and Alder Swamp, Mixed Hardwoods and Sedge Meadow.

Best Birds: Powell Marsh SWA is the best spot in Vilas County for viewing shorebirds in spring and fall.  The dike trails provide a great opportunity to view Trumpeter Swan, Ring-necked Duck, Virginia Rail and Sora, yellowlegs, Wilson’s Snipe, Black Tern, and Common Loon.      

In the alders and sedges search forSandhill Crane, Northern Harrier,  American Bittern,  Marsh and Sedge Wren, Swamp and LeConte’s Sparrow, and Bobolink.

Directions:  35 miles SE of ironwood, MI/23 miles north of Woodruff. The wildlife area is on Powell Road between Highway 51 and Highway 47. A centrally located parking area is on Powell Road at (46.09396, -89.90069). A second parking area is on the east side on Marsh Road at (46.10079 -89.87493). Another parking area is on the west side, just over the Iron County line, on Powell Marsh Road just south of Powell Road at (46.09719, -89.93275).
