Blackjack Springs Wilderness/State Natural Area

Habitat: Mixed Coniferous Forest, Northern Hardwood Forest, Boreal Forest, Open Water.

Best Birds: Blue-headed and Yellow Throated Vireo, Blackburnian, Black-and-white Warbler, Scarlet Tanager and Evening Grosbeak can be encountered along the various trails and along Indian Road (FR 2178), south from the parking lot.      

Directions: 77 miles SE of Ironwood, MI/

14 miles NE of Eagle River.  There is a parking area on Indian Road (FR 2178) near the Whispering Lake Trailhead at (46.00065, -89.07358). Walk the roadside south of the parking area, along Indian Road. Or follow the trail across the road to the west and go deep into the forest to Whispering Lake and beyond to Blackjack Springs.

This vast wilderness area located along the western edge of the Nicolet section of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest offers a mix of habitats to hike and bird.  Most hiking trails are located in the northern portion of the unit; Trails lead to a variety of habitats including upland ridges, remote lakes and springs.
