Borst Valley Sedge Meadow SNA, Trempealeau County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitats: Sedge Meadow, Oak-Savanna, Oak-Hickory Forest, Southern Hardwood Forest, Non-Native and Restored Grassland.  

Best Birds: Brushy openings and edges of fragmented forest on both sides of County Highway V have good shrub birds like Black-billed Cuckoo, Brown Thrasher, Mourning and Blue-winged Warbler, and Field Sparrow. In the large patch of oak forest on the west end of the property, Acadian Flycatcher and Hooded Warbler can be found, along with Broad-winged Hawk, Wood Thrush, Veery, and Scarlet Tanager

Directions: 29 miles S of Eau Claire/7 miles northwest of Independence at the intersection of County Highway V and County Highway VV. A central location for parking is on V, 0.2 miles north of the intersection, (44.45661, -91.48757).  Borst Valley Sedge Meadow SNA lies in the Sunshine Valley portion of the Borst Valley Wildlife Area along an unnamed tributary to Borst Valley Creek. From County V go northwest on Engum Valley Road nearly 0.6 miles to a parking area west of the road, (44.45761, -91.49861). The SNA is to the east and south on both sides of the road.

Address and additional information:

On both sides of the meadow is oak dominated forest. The forest overlooking the meadow along County Highway V is in a state of oak savanna restoration. The site extends to the north and west along a forested ridge and ends at the property boundary to the west at a good-sized patch of upland oak forest
