Navarino SWA - Wolf River Flowage

Habitat: Hardwood Swamp, Willow Swamp, Cattail Marsh, Open Water. 

Best Birds: Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Sora, Virginia and King Rail, Black Tern, Great Egret, Least Bittern, Red-shouldered Hawk, Willow Flycatcher, Marsh Wren, Yellow-headed Blackbird. A wide variety of shorebirds have been found in late summer to fall season in the south end of the middle section when the water levels and mudflats were ideal. 

Directions: 35 miles WNW of Green Bay/11 miles east of Clintonville. The parking area is on County Road K, 2.3 miles north of Hwy 156, (44.66628, -88.57945).  Walk to the west on the dike about 0.4 miles into the site. There are additional parking areas 0.75 mile to the south (44.65434, -88.58166) and 1.25 mile to the south (44.64704, -88.58307). 

Site Address and Additional Information:

The flowage is divided into 3 diked areas, with trails on top of the dikes. The northern section is mostly Cattail marsh; the middle and southern sections are mostly sedge meadow/ willow swamp with open water at varying levels, depending on the drawdowns that year. On the west side of the dikes is a ditch that drains into the Wolf River. This area is mostly lowland hardwoods.

It is advisable to wear rubber boots as the grass can be tall and is usually wet. Mosquitoes and deer flies can also be bothersome.
