Totagatic River State Wildlife Area

Habitat: Open Water, Marsh.

Best Birds: Highlights include Trumpeter Swan, Wilson’s Snipe, Common Loon, Osprey, American Bittern, Virginia Rail, and Sora. Additionally, Least Bittern, Marsh Wren and Yellow-headed Blackbird occur in small numbers.  Because the flowage is very narrow it’s possible to get good views from anywhere on the water.

The forest along Duck Pond Road leading to the dam at the far north side of the flowage is good for Broad-winged Hawk, Ruffed Grouse, Veery, Blackburnian, Chestnut-sided, Golden-winged, and Black-throated Green Warbler, and Scarlet Tanager.

Directions: 58 miles SW of Ashland7miles north of Hayward. By far the best way to experience the flowage up close and personal is by canoe or kayak. The boat landing on the Totagatic River on State Hwy 27 is at (46.10132, -91.51400).  A small parking lot on the west side of Hwy 27 just south of the boat landing provides a nice overlook of the flowage, 46.09984, -91.51661. A second boat landing is located on Duck Pond Road/Wozney Road 2.5 miles west of Hwy 27 (46.130195, -91.557804).
