Washington Creek SWA, Rusk County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat:  Open Water, Marsh, Mixed Conifer Forest.

Best Birds:  The woodland access trail off of Boot Lake Rd should produce Ruffed Grouse, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Eastern Wood Pewee and Scarlet Tanager. Inspect the impoundment and marsh for Pied-billed Grebe and Common Loon. The marsh border should produce Sora and Sedge Wren. Inspect the shrub/oak savannah acreage east of the impoundment for  Black-billed Cuckoo, Brown Thrasher and Eastern Towhee. 

From late August through October, the fields along Sawdust Rd. (south border of the property) serve as a staging area for several hundred Sandhill Crane.

Directions: 46 miles NNE of Eau Claire/10 mi south of Ladysmith. From State Highway 27 go west on County D to CTH E. Proceed north on E to the SWA impoundment. Access with parking off of County CTH E on the east boundary, 45.333603, -91.229774, and from Boot Lake Rd on the west boundary.

Site Address and Additional Information:

Washington Creek State Wildlife Area comprises approx. 500 acres of mixed conifer, oak, aspen, lowland shrub and scattered patches of conifer bog. At its epicenter is a 200 acre shallow marsh and drainage impoundment.
