Habitat:  Open Water, Marsh, Northern Hardwood Forest, Mixed Conifer Forest.

Best Birds:  The impoundment is best-known for its waterfowl, water and wading birds. Resident breeders include Trumpeter Swan, Ring-necked Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Hooded Merganser, Pied-billed GrebeBlack Tern, and Common LoonAmerican Bittern may also be present. Sedge Wren inhabit the sedge, alder and lowland shrub areas. Bald Eagle and Osprey nest here. The forest and associated edge supports Ruffed Grouse, American Woodcock, Hermit Thrush, Mourning Warbler, and Golden-winged Warbler.

Directions:  74 miles NNE of Eau Claire/11 miles north of Ladysmith. Take State Highway 27 to Lea Lake Rd. Proceed east approx. 1.5 miles to the dam and boat Launch.

Site Address and Additional Information:

Lea Lake comprises a 222 acre, shallow impoundment of the Little Thornapple River. Most of its upper reach is marshland with extensive beds of Wild Rice, other emergent, floating-leaf and submerged aquatic vegetation. The surrounding forests are owned and managed by Rusk County for pulp (aspen), mixed conifer and hardwood production.
