Habitat: Bottomland Hardwood Forest, Northern Hardwood Forest, Mixed Coniferous Forest, Open Water.
Best Birds: The River Pines segment, starting at the intersection of Sherman Ave and Whiting Ave, samples mature white pine forest and mixed bottomland forest birds like Pileated Woodpecker, flycatchers, thrushes, finches, warblers, and Scarlet Tanager. Scan the Wisconsin River for waterfowl.
Located at the end of Bliss Avenue, the Water Tower Trail runs along the Wisconsin River through bottomland hardwood forest and may hold Pileated Woodpecker, flycatchers, vireos, and warblers. Scan the river for waterfowl and Bald Eagle.
The Black Bridge Lookout at the south end of Wisconsin St is a good vantage point to view waterfowl below the Stevens Point dam. Part of the Green Circle Trail also runs above the Stevens Point dam, and waterfowl, gulls, and Bald Eagle can be viewed here.
The Westside Loop of the Green Circle is located off of W River Dr. This segment features bottomland hardwood forest and shrub marsh. Red-headed Woodpecker, flycatchers, vireos, Common Raven, wrens, thrushes, sparrows, warblers, and Scarlet Tanager can be observed here.
Directions: Located on the south and west side of Stevens Point.
River Pines Trail: Park on the north shoulder of Sherman Ave just west of the Whiting Ave intersection, 44.4938727, -89.5747009, the trail heads north from here.
Water Tower Trail: Located at the west terminus of Bliss Ave Stevens Point. 44.5118936, -89.5860782.
Black Bridge Lookout/Stevens Point Dam Trail: The black bridge lookout can be accessed by the west terminus of Wisconsin St. 44.5141409, -89.5855122. Another parking area is located across the river on W River Dr just before the railroad tracks. Park in the small gravel area north of the business parking lot, 44.515631, -89.590068, and hike north or east along the trail.
Westside Loop: A small pullout is located on the west side of W River Dr just north of the intersection with River View Ave. The trail heads west from here.
