Habitat: Open Water, Urban/Residential, Southern Hardwood Forest.
Best Birds: In winter, the river attracts hundreds of Common Goldeneye and Common Merganser with occasional Red-breasted Merganser. White-winged Scoter has been reported. Great Black-backed, Lesser Black-backed, Iceland and Glaucous Gull may be present on the ice shelves and below each of the 3 dams, especially if a fish-kill has occurred. In spring, Bonaparte’s Gull may be seen and at low water levels, Solitary Sandpiper, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs. Look for Black-crowned Night Heron at dusk and dawn near the shores. Bald Eagle nest in area Cottonwoods, Cliff Swallow at the bridges and Herring Gull on the industrial rooftops. Peregrine Falcon is often seen and Merlin is becoming a more frequent nester. American White Pelican have been increasing.
Along the banks, Black-billed Cuckoo, Yellow-throated and Warbling vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and Orchard Oriole are regular. In winter, Bohemian Waxwing should be looked for in the Crabapples on the Lawrence U. campus.
Directions: In the City of Appleton from the intersection of College Avenue and Lawe Street, go S. on Lawe, then left on E. Newberry St. to the parking area.

This area is a 1.5 mi river corridor that extends from the upriver Vulcan Heritage Park down to Telulah Park. The unifying feature is the Fox River with City of Appleton Trails on each side and the adjacent Lawrence University campus.
