Raven Trails – Northern Highland American Legion State Forest

Raven Trail (Northern Highland American Legion SF), Oneida County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Hemlock-Hardwoods Forest, Northern Hardwoods Forest, Open Water, Sedge Meadow, Alder and Willow Swamp, Conifer Bog. 

Best Birds: On the lakes look for Common Loon and Osprey. Distinctive breeding birds of the NHAL State Forest include Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Yellow-throated and Blue-headed Vireo, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Winter Wren, Veery, Hermit Thrush and a good variety of wood warblers.

Directions: 72 miles N of Wausau/5 miles east of Minoqua. From Hwy 47 turn east onto Woodruff Road then north 0.7 miles to the parking lot for the trailhead (45.86866, -89.65152). In addition to the nature trail there are several more loop trails varying in length from 2 to 7 miles. The trail system winds past both Clear Lake and Inkpot Lake. There is a paved accessible trail 5.6 miles long one-way that starts at the nearby Clear Lake Campground (45.86503, -89.65065) and extends to both the north and south.

The Raven Nature Trail is a moderately hilly, heavily wooded trail that is 1.4 miles in length. This trail winds through a large hemlock glade, along Hemlock Lake and a conifer bog.
