Habitat: Mixed Coniferous Forest, Hemlock-Hardwood Forest.
Best birds: This fascinating area is a gem of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest where a birder can walk trails and old logging roads among 100-foot-tall pines and hemlocks. You will notice the prehistoric calls of a Great Blue Heron rookery, please don’t disturb them during this important time in their life cycle. Many typical coniferous breeders are common, including Golden-crowned Kinglet, Hermit Thrush, and Black-throated Green, Blackburnian, and Pine Warbler. Red Crossbill can be found occasionally during any time of year. The surrounding area is a hemlock-hardwood forest where a variety of warblers, vireos, and other passerines are common breeders.
Directions: 79 miles NW of Green Bay. To reach the hiking trail take County Road F west from State Highway 32 in Lakewood for 0.9 mile, then turn southwest on Forest Road 2121 (Archibald Lake Road). After 1.5 miles, turn northwest on Cathedral Drive (FR 3299) and the parking area is in 0.4 mile.
