https://ebird.org/wi/hotspot/L168599

Habitat: Open Water, Beaches and Mudflats

Best Birds: When water levels are high (usually spring through mid-summer), check this area over for waterfowl, grebes, loons, gulls, and American White Pelican which are occasionally seen. Watch for Purple Martin from a nearby residential house with a large nesting colony. When water levels are low (on average, mid-summer thru fall), exposed mudflats will attract a variety of migrant shorebirds, including; Hudsonian Godwit, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, and Red-necked Phalarope, gulls, and terns. Other unusual sightings have included Eared Grebe, Franklin’s Gull, and Caspian Tern. American Pipit will also show up when water levels are low.

Directions: 23 miles SW of Wausau/ approximately 5 driving miles southwest of Mosinee, WI along County Highway O. Park along Basswood Lane (44.742501, -89.787879) and cross over the highway (use caution, watch for traffic) to the water’s edge.
