Bill Crosse State Wildlife Area

Habitat: Northern Hardwood Forest, Open Water, Marsh, Bottomland Hardwoods, Pine Plantation.

Best Birds: On the walk down to the pond look for Ruffed Grouse, Wood Thrush, and Black-and-White Warbler. On the East Side of the river is New Wood County Park which usually hosts a good variety of warblers during migration. There you can also look for nesting Blue Gray Gnatcatcher.  

Directions: 25 Miles North of Wausau. The property is split in two by the Wisconsin River; the main spot for birding is on the West side of the river.Look for a small parking area on the East side of Tesch road just north of Wangen Drive.

The trail from this parking area goes to a pond and around to another parking lot further North on Tesch Rd. The loop is roughly 3 Miles but make sure you bring a GPS as there are no trail maps available and the trails aren’t marked.
