Habitat: Open Water, Marsh, Beaches and Mudflats, Urban, Bottomland Hardwoods.
Best Birds: Swans, ducks, geese, and shorebirds during spring and fall migration. Pied-billed Grebe, Virginia Rail, Sora, Black Tern, Bald Eagle, Osprey, Great Horned Owl, Peregrine Falcon, Willow Flycatcher are all known nesters or regular visitors. The Myrick Marsh is a wetland along the La Crosse River that divides the city of La Crosse into a north and south side. Walking these trails during the spring and fall migration is often very productive as the large open water areas create migrant traps in the wooded high spots along the trail and the La Crosse River.
Directions: The best access is in Myrick Park off of La Crosse Street. The Myrick Marsh has several established trails with 2 starting near the Myrick Park Center (43.822468,-91.224413). The Rabbit trail heads north and joins a paved trail and the Wood Duck trail heads east along the south edge of the marsh. There is also a paved trail that starts at the north end of East Avenue (43.822973,-91.228906). The paved trail crosses the La Crosse River with more habitat north of the river.
