Lake Onalaska

Upper Mississippi River NWR--Lake Onalaska Spillway, La Crosse, US-WI – eBird Hotspot

Nelson Park (La Crosse) – eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Open Water, Beaches and Mudflats, Riparian edge, Urban Park.

Best Birds:  Swans, geese, ducks, gulls, terns, Horned Grebe and Common Loon during spring and Fall migrations.  Black, White-winged & Surf Scoter occasional in November.  Bald Eagle, Osprey, American White Pelican, Double-crested Cormorant, and swallows common during the summer months. There is a walkway from which to view the lake on top of the spillway dike that forms the south end of the lake.  At Nelson Park there is a viewing platform to check the lake and a small park that can hold passerines during migration.

Directions: 5 miles N of La Crosse. French Island on the Mississippi River is located north of I-90 at exit 1 in the greater La Crosse area. The Spillway is at the end of Spillway Drive about ½ mile directly east of the La Crosse Airport and west of Lakeshore Drive (43.86878,-91.275894).  Nelson Park is located at the northern tip of French Island at the north end of Lakeshore Drive (43.89524,-91.27053).
