Habitat: Open Water, Bottomland Hardwoods, Non-Native Grassland, Marsh, Beaches and Mudflats, Pine Plantation.
Best Birds: Ducks, gulls, terns, Common Loon, warblers, and sparrows in spring migration. Northern Shrike, Lapland Longspur, and Snow Bunting are occasional winter visitors. Great Horned Owl, Grasshopper Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, and Orchard Oriole can be nesters.
Fishermen’s Road forms the east boundary of the La Crosse Airport. This road allows access to the Black River Beach and farther north a dike and spillway where waterfowl, shorebirds and gulls can be seen during migration. North of the spillway area, the wooded area on both sides of the road are a migrant trap during spring and fall migrations. The airport grounds can attract Snowy Owls in the winter and are also good for grassland birds including nesting Lark Sparrows and other grassland species.
Directions: Fishermen’s Road is located north of I-90 on the north side of La Crosse. To access Fishermen’s road, get off I-90 at the airport exit and turn north onto Dawson Avenue. Follow that road straight into the airport tower area. Just before the tower, turn right (east) on Fishermen’s Road and follow it along the east perimeter of the airport property. Continue to the Black River Beach (43.87211,-91.24572), Farther north on the road you can also access the dike and spillway (43.88406,-91.24452).
