Coulee Experimental Forest

Coulee Experimental State Forest, La Crosse County, Wi, US – eBird Hotspot

Habitat: 3000 acres of Oak-Hickory Forest, Successional Oldfield, and Pine Plantation on the east edge of the Driftless area in La Crosse County.

Best Birds: Ruffed Grouse, Pileated Woodpecker, Acadian Flycatcher, Common Raven, Veery, Wood Thrush, Hooded, Cerulean, Blue-winged, and Mourning Warbler. There is a great network of trails through various age classes of forest with small openings and brushy areas.

Directions:  15 miles east of La Crosse. About 1 mile southwest of Bangor.  The forest can be accessed via three trailheads.  The North Parking Area is at the end of the Russlan Coulee Road about 2 miles west of Hwy 162 (43.860487,-91.023319).  The East Parking Area is located on County Hwy II (43.84450, -91.01974).  The West Parking Area is at the east end of a separate segment of Russlan Coulee Road that is about 2.25 miles north and east of County M, east of Barre Mills (43.848008,-91.041005).
