Little Scarboro Hunting Grounds, Kewaunee County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Bottomland Hardwoods, Native and Restored Grasslands, Successional Oldfield, Alder Swamp, and Pine Plantation.

Best Birds: The bottomland hardwoods hold Ruffed Grouse, Wood Thrush, Mourning Warbler and Northern Waterthrush. This stretch of forest is also near the southern limit for northern birds like Broad-winged Hawk, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Brown Creeper, and White-throated Sparrow.  Alongside Swamp Lane, there is a small chunk of Willow and Alder Swamp where one can find Alder and Willow Flycatcher.  This area is good for woodland butterflies as well.  If one walks the gravel after a fresh rain, you can expect Baltimore Checkerspot, Great Spangled Fritillary, and a nice mix of satyrs and skippers.

The parking lot off Hill Rd is where the Dog Training Area is located.  This restored grassland holds Field, Grasshopper, and Henslow’s Sparrow.  The woody vegetation around the parking lot has Eastern Towhee, Brown Thrasher, Golden-winged, and Blue-winged Warbler. The pines at the edge of the prairie may produce Common Raven,  Red-breasted Nuthatch, and Pine Warbler,.

A short drive away is a parking area for access to the Ahnapee Trail System.  Walking east from here will put you on a trail through the woods running along the Kewaunee River. Belted Kingfisher,  Barred Owl, Winter Wren, and Purple Finch call this area home.
