Ahnapee State Trail

Ahnapee State Trail--Blahnik Heritage Park Area, Kewaunee County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Cedar Swamp, Northern Hardwoods, Open Water, Successional Oldfield, Bottomland Hardwoods, Marsh.

Best Birds:  The Ahnapee Trail System extends 50 miles through Kewaunee County and about 98% of bird species seen in the county can be observed from the trail system. These include both Black-billed and Yellow-billed Cuckoo along the edge habitats near Algoma.     

Chestnut-sided, Mourning, and Nashville Warbler nest along the forested regions of the trails and almost all duck species can be seen as the trail runs along the Kewaunee and Ahnapee Rivers.  

Where the trail winds through the cedar swamp by Casco, Broad-winged Hawk , Winter Wren, Red-breasted Nuthatch, and Purple Finch can be found. Field Sparrow can be found along the ag fields and successional oldfields east of Luxemburg.

Directions: 33 miles E of Green Bay. Parking areas for the trail system can be found near County M north of Algoma (44.6262, -87.4600), River Road in Kewaunee (44.4601, -87.5037), and Sunset Road in Luxemburg (44.5310, -87.6507) as well as many roadsides where the trail intersects.
