Habitat: Open Water, Northern Hardwoods, Mixed Coniferous Forest.
Best Birds: Nesting Common Loon and. Bald Eagle. Waterfowl common but often at a distance. Spotting scope helpful. Good area for migrant waterfowl, warblers and sparrows. One of few locations where shorebirds may be seen in migration in Iron County when flowage is drawn down, usually in August.
Directions: 4 miles S of ironwood, MI/3 miles south of Hurley. This site is a route to follow by car along Hwy 51, Cth C and Knight Road., west of Hwy 51. Access also from small Village of Gile near the dam. Cth C goes through the Gile Flowage acting as a dike. Some of the best viewing is off Hwy 51 where shoulders are wide but traffic volume can be high. Caution warranted.
