Little Turtle Flowage Wildlife Area

Habitat: Open Water, Marsh, Restored Grassland, Northern Hardwood Forest. 

Best Birds: Breeding Trumpeter Swan, Ring-necked Ducks, Hooded Merganser, Sandhill Crane, Black Tern, American Bittern, Osprey, and Marsh Wren. When the flowage is drawn down there can be migrating shorebirds present. 

   

Directions: Site is 4 miles SW of Mercer. West of Mercer on Hwy 51, take Cth FF and follow MECCA ski trail signs on CTH FF to Popko Circle East and turn on either Little Pike Lake Road or Joe Shacks Road to reach the MECCA parking lot. 46.144849  -90.092161

Site Address & Additional Information:

1200 acres including 260 acres cattail wetlands, 45 acres restored grasslands, 900 acres northern hardwoods with conifers throughout. Main flowage has wild rice which attracts water birds. Brush encroached  grasslands are good area for migrating and breeding warblers and sparrows. There are 3 miles of maintained trails for excellent birding, and benches for watching wildlife along main flowage. Area is open to hunting.
