Habitat: Southern Hardwood Forest, Native or restored Prairie (Dane County section). Blue Mound State Park is a 1,153-acre park located on the highest hill in southern Wisconsin. Overlooking the forest are two observation towers at the top of the bluff, which give visitors amazing views of the surrounding areas.
Best Birds: Many of the expected southern forest bird species can be found here, including Pileated Woodpecker, Acadian Flycatcher, Tufted Titmouse, Wood Thrush, Blue-winged Warbler, and Scarlet Tanager. Hooded Warbler are a regular nesters, and other uncommon warbler species include Cerulean, Kentucky, and Louisiana Waterthrush. Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Black-billed Cuckoo, and Veery can be found in some of the thicker brush. The remnant prairie has occasionally produced unusual bird species like Northern Bobwhite and Yellow-breasted Chat.
Directions: 25 miles W of Madison. From Highway 18/151 go north on CTH F, and at the stop sign turn left onto CTH ID. Continue west on ID about 0.5 mile into the village of Blue Mounds, then turn right (north) on Mounds Road, which curves west and becomes Mounds Park Road as you leave the village. The park entrance is on your left, about one mile from the intersection of CTH ID and Mounds Road.
