Habitat: Open Water.
Best birds: Wide variety of waterfowl during migration – both dabblers and divers, including Tundra Swan, Greater White-fronted Goose, Cackling Goose, Snow Goose, Ross’s Goose, Canvasback, Redhead, Lesser and Greater Scaup (latter rare). Ruddy Duck are often present in very large numbers, and Surf and White-winged Scoters have been spotted.
Other waterbird possibilities include American White Pelican, and grebes spotted here include Eared, Red-necked and Western. Great Egret is often present. Forster’s Tern and Black Tern are often found in season, along with Bonaparte’s Gull. Other rare species have included Little Gull, Franklin’s Gull, and Red-necked Phalarope.
Directions: 54 miles NNE of Madison. Lake Maria County Park (43.651348, -89.016323) is located off the east side of Hwy. 73 about 1.25 miles north of the County Line Road/County Road AW.
