Lower Wisconsin State Riverway – Blue River Sand Barrens SNA

Habitat:  Oak Barrens, Dry and Sand Prairie, Marshland, Open Water, Bottomland Hardwoods, Pine Plantation.   

Best Birds:  In this 950 acre site look for Lark Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, and Vesper Sparrow in the Dry Sand Prairie and Oak Barrens.  In the Bottomland Hardwoods look for Red-eyed Vireo, Pileated Woodpecker, Red-headed Woodpecker, Blue-winged Warbler, Great-crested Flycatcher, Prothonotary Warbler, and Brown Creeper.   In the Marsh area look for Sandhill Crane, Green Heron, Sedge and Marsh Wren and waterfowl.  For night-time birding listen for Barred and Screech Owl.

Directions:  Two miles east of Blue River between the Wisconsin River and State Highway 133.  East walk-in access to the Blue River Sand Barrens SNA is on Wightman Road with parking along the road at 43.190693, -90.528153.  For west side access to open water, marsh and bottomland woods areas park along High Bank and Fish Trap Roads which can be reached from Lake Road north off State Highway 133 at or near 43.188769, -90.555886.    

Site Address and Additional Information:   High water from the Wisconsin River flow or beaver activity may close access to these water related habitats.
