Columbus Park

Habitat: Southern Hardwood Forest, Native and Restored Grassland, Willow/ Dogwood Swamp, Open Water, Urban/Residential.

Best Birds: The nature trail borders the northside of the Milwaukee River for most of its length but also winds through a restored grassland. From the parking lot, pick up the trail and travel west along the river to where the trail ends at a bridge that crosses the river. Species of note here include; Red-bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-throated Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

Traveling east from the parking lot, the trail again borders the river to a bridge. At the bridge, either continue straight along the river portion of the trail for another 0.5 miles, then veer left slightly through the restored prairie, or cross the bridge and bird the south side of the river east and west. If you do cross the bridge there are no maintained trails. Continuing east along the river additional species may include Wild Turkey, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Pileated Woodpecker, Belted Kingfisher, Great Crested Flycatcher, Alder Flycatcher, Willow Flycatcher,  swallows, Cedar Waxwing, and Northern Waterthrush (spring/fall reliably)..

As the last section of this river trail passes through the prairie check for Orchard Oriole. The prairie section has Eurasian Collared-Dove near the houses on the ridge, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Tree Swallow, Brown Thrasher along the brushy edge, and Field Sparrow. On the north edge of the park, there is a water treatment facility. Gulls, terns, and shorebirds often frequent this area.

Directions: 51 miles NNW of Milwaukee, in the city of Campbellsport. From Hwy 67 to the north or County Road Y on the south turn onto New Cassell Street and continue one block to the park.
