Highway 12 Ponds

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L391066

Habitat:  Cropland, Mudflats, Open Water.

Best Birds:  In a wet spring, this ephemeral pond is often the best spot in the county for variety and numbers of migratory swans, geese, ducks and shorebirds.  Viewing from the shoulder of Highway 12 is the best vantage point however traffic can be heavy.  For a quieter spot, go to County AF on the south side of the flooded area and scan to the north and also south of AF where an additional low spot is often flooded and hosting migratory shorebirds. A small wetland area on the SW corner has nesting Sora and Wilson's Snipe, plus another migratory shorebird opportunity.

Directions: 16 miles SE of Eau Claire. From Fall Creek, drive 4 miles southeast on Highway 12 to a low spot on the south side of the highway (44.739271, -91.207505).  For a second vantage point, continue to County AF and turn right (west).  At the intersection of County AF and Morning Crest Rd (44.734660, -91.206069) there is an additional low spot on the SE corner.
