Habitat: Open Water, Northern Hardwood Forest, Successional Oldfield.

Best Birds: The wetlands and springs; northern hardwoods and boreal forest communities are populated by birds typically found in northeastern Wisconsin forests,like Pileated Woodpecker, Great Crested Flycatcher, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and Scarlet Tanager. Also possible are American Woodcock, Bald Eagle, Sharp Shinned Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk, Eastern Screech, Barred, and Great Horned Owl, and Yellow-throated Vireo. Sandhill Crane, Clay-colored, and Field Sparrow, and Eastern Meadowlark, can be observed in the old field and shrubby portions of the property. During spring migration, a host of migrating warblers, including Blue-winged, Nashville, Chestnut-sided, Black-and-white and Black-throated Green may be found gorging on midges in the forests along the Niagara Escarpment.

Directions: 52 miles NE of Green Bay/8miles north of Sturgeon Bay. Parking lots are located at 5454 Bay Shore Drive, (44.93485, -87.39068) and west of Carlsvulle at 5519 Reynolds Road, (44.93809, -87.36857).

These 273 protected acres contain 2.5 miles of hiking trails along the Niagara Escarpment with magnificent views of surrounding landscape and of the Green Bay waters below. The blufflands are home to eight species of orchids including state threatened ram’s head lady’s slipper; and federally endangered land snails. The Bay Shore Blufflands Nature Preserve is open 365 days a year from dawn to dusk. No fees are required to use the trails.
