Lake Kegonsa State Park, Dane County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Open Water, Marsh, Southern Hardwood Forest, Pine Plantation, Native and Restored Grasslands.

Best Birds: The best birding during migration is typically found along the trails in the southeast quadrant of the park that go along/around the beach areas and adjoining picnic areas. Almost all migratory warblers and vireos can be found here plus breeding Prothonotary Warbler. This area also has breeding Yellow-Billed Cuckoo and Warbling Vireo. Osprey and Great Horned Owl typically nest on the powerline stands in this area. Broad-winged Hawk potentially breed.    

A short boardwalk and viewing platform enter a small marsh that contains waterfowl, Sora, Virginia Rail, possible Common Gallinule and Marsh Wren. The western edge of the prairie gets early-morning sun and can produce nice views of warblers during migration. The prairie trails are also a good place to find American Woodcock displaying in the early spring and Orchard Oriole in the summer months.  The White Oak Trail loop of mature forest produces a typical assortment of woodpeckers, flycatchers, songbirds as well as Barred Owl and Tufted Titmouse.

Directions: 15 miles southeast of Madison. On Door Creek Road in Stoughton. Enter the park and proceed to the beach parking area (42.972863, -89.230686) or White Oak Trail area (42.980181, -89.235925).
