Elmer and Edna Culver Wetlands Conservancy, Dane County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Marsh, Southern Hardwood Forest, Mixed Coniferous Forest, Pine Plantation, Native and Restored Grasslands, Willow, Alder or Dogwood Swamp, Cropland.

Best Birds:  The conservancy is a diverse property that is an excellent migrant trap. Birding along the entrance road and small prairie parcel can yield Brown Thrasher and several interesting sparrow species (resident Savannah Sparrow, migrating White-Crowned and White-Throated Sparrow). Vesper Sparrow is sometimes found in this entry/field area or in the adjacent cropland fields east of the main trail as you work into the southeast portion of the park.

The pine and spruce near the creek may contain Golden-Crowned Kinglet in migration (some overwinter) as well as attract winter finches in irruption years. The springs, wetland and swamp areas are good for breeding Swamp Sparrows. All areas of the park attract a great number of migrating warblers, vireos and flycatchers. During midge hatches, the wet areas can be especially bountiful with warblers including Northern Waterthrush.

Nighttime owling during the winter months can be fantastic with Great Horned, Barred, Eastern Screech-Owl, and Northern Saw-Whet Owl.

Directions:  14 miles northeast of Madison off of Erge Road.  Park in the first gravel lot at 43.20901, -89.28099, or if the gate is open, there is an option to park ¼ mile south.
