Sensiba State Wildlife Area

Sensiba SWA, Brown County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Marsh, Open Water, Southern Hardwood Forest, Hardwood Swamp.

Best Birds: The coastal wetland to the north and west of Sunset Beach Road offers one of the best spots in the state to view breeding marshbirds including common Common Gallinule, Sora, Virginia Rail, Least Bittern, and American Bittern, as well as abundant Forster’s Tern, Black-crowned Night-Heron, and Yellow-headed Blackbird. These species as well as all regular species of dabbling and diving ducks (in migration) can be observed by walking the looped dike and boardwalk system. The open water of Green Bay to the east of Sunset Beach Road produces very high numbers of migrating diving ducks, good numbers of loons and grebes, and the ever-present hunting Caspian and Common Tern. When water levels are low, check any exposed sandbars or mudflats for shorebirds.

The hardwood swamp and hardwood forest to the north of the first parking area (west of the marsh) can be productive for warblers and other migrants.

Directions: From Green Bay, take US Highway 41/141 north to the County Road B/Sunset Beach Road exit. Take County Road B east to County Road J. Go south on County Road J to Sunset Beach Road. The looped dike and boardwalk system can be accessed from parking lots here (44.63393, -88.02199) and at the boat launch (44.63181, -88.01486)
