Point Comfort, Brown County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot
Habitat: Open Water, Hardwood Swamp, Beaches and Mudflats.
Best Birds: Point Comfort is a small peninsula that juts to the north into Green Bay, providing good views of high numbers of diving ducks and mergansers in spring and fall migrations. Loons and grebes are regular and Long-tailed Duck and scoters are occasionally seen. During lower water levels, the shoreline at the point and to the northeast is a good location for shorebirds, particularly Ruddy Turnstone. Merlin occasionally nest in the tall pines near the point.
Point Comfort Road divides a hardwood swamp that has occasional breeding Red-headed Woodpecker and Brown Creeper, as well as the most consistent population of Tufted Titmouse in the region. Walking the road in either direction from the junction of Anapaula Lane can produce an excellent variety of warblers and other passerines in spring migration. This area can have productive owling with Barred Owl any time of year and Northern Saw-whet Owl in winter.
Directions: Exit State Highway 57 to the east on Nicolet Drive (County Road A) and proceed 1.7 miles to Point Comfort Road. The road dead ends to the north at the Bay. Parking near the intersection of Point Comfort Rd and Anapauls Lane is recommended because parking is not allowed at the dead end of Point Comfort Road at the point.
