Habitat: Open Water, Mixed Coniferous Forest, Northern Hardwood Forest, Marsh.
Best Birds: Hooded Merganser and Common Loon nest on the lake while Bald Eagle and Osprey forage there. The heavily wooded shoreline provides habitat for a wide variety of birds such as Sharp-shinned Hawk, Merlin, Blue-headed Vireo, and Winter Wren, as well as an assortment of warblers including Northern Waterthrush, Cape May, Blackburnian, Canada, Black-throated Green, and Northern Parula. Ruby-crowned Kinglet is always a possibility.
Directions: 49 miles south of Ashland on County Road M. Portions of the lake can be viewed from the boat landing but the best way to experience this site is by canoe or kayak. The boat landing is about one mile northwest of Clam Lake off County Hwy M at the end of Dump Rd., (46.172872, -90.917095). A side trip up the West Fork Chippewa River on the west side of the lake opposite the dam is especially scenic and “birdy.” A nice nature trail follows the eastern shoreline by the campground which is accessed from the east from County Road GG. A small daily use fee is required for use of the property.
