Chequamegon NF--Clam Lake area (Ashland Co.), Ashland County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot
Habitat: Cedar Swamp, Hardwood Swamp, Conifer Bog, Mixed Coniferous Forest, Northern Hardwood Forest, Hemlock-Hardwood Forest, Willow, Alder or Dogwood Swamp, Open Water.
Best Birds: Some of the more widespread species include Sharp-shinned and Broad-winged Hawk, Ruffed Grouse, Wild Turkey, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Hermit and Wood Thrush, White-throated Sparrow, and Nashville, Yellow-rumped and Black-throated Green Warbler. Look for Blue-headed Vireo, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Northern Parula, Blackburnian Warbler and Pine Siskin in areas with mature conifers, Magnolia Warbler in dense young Balsam Fir and White Spruce stands, and Cape May Warbler in mature Balsam Fir and White Spruce. Low, wet brushy areas may have Winter Wren, Northern Waterthrush and Canada Warbler.
There is a large beaver pond where FR 347 crosses Ding Dong Creek. Sedge Wren is usually found here and Pied-billed Grebe and American Bittern may be present at the pond. Olive-sided Flycatcher can sometimes be heard singing from the dead trees well upstream from the pond.
Look for Golden-winged, Chestnut-sided and Mourning Warbler in brushy and regenerating logged areas.
Tennessee Warbler has been found several times in recent years in this area in mature Tamarack/Black Spruce bogs. Ruby-crowned Kinglet and the elusive Black-backed Woodpecker also occur in this habitat.
Directions: 39 miles S of ashland/approximately six miles northeast of Clam Lake centered at the junction of Forest Roads (FR) 347 and 182 (46.200055, - 90.777412).
