
Lynn Barber, president of the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology, will give a glimpse into her life as an avid birder. In recent years, this has included writing books about birds and about her birding adventures, the most recent of which is A Charisma of Owls. She will show photographs and paintings of birds, illustrating highlights from some of her big years and her books, and will feature excerpts from her upcoming book on owls. She will also provide an update on Wisconsin Society for Ornithology’s current activities.
Lynn E. Barber was born in Wisconsin, where she now lives with her husband after having lived in Alaska, Oregon, North Carolina, Texas, and South Dakota. She has BA (Zoology), and MS and PhD (Microbiology) degrees from UW Madison and a JD degree from Duke University Law School. She was a microbiology professor at Oregon State University and a USDA Research Microbiologist at North Carolina State University. After law school she worked as a patent attorney beginning in 1985, having a solo practice from 1996-2021. She is now retired. She is a lifelong birder and writer of rhymes. Her birding adventures have extended around the world and include doing birding big years across the US and Canada, and in Texas, South Dakota, Alaska and Wisconsin. She has written five books about birds and her birding adventures, one of which is primarily in rhyme, and the most recent of which is about owls, A Charisma of Owls. Since 2009, she has created numerous paintings, primarily of birds. Her books are illustrated with her paintings and photographs. She has played hammered dulcimer and handbells for many years.
