On Friday May 18th, 2018. At The City of Appleton Scheig Center is located within Appleton Memorial Park. The city will hosting John Bates for a guest talk and discussion.

John Bates is the author of nine books and a contributor to seven others, all of which focus on the natural history of the Northwoods. He’s worked as a naturalist in Wisconsin’s Northwoods for 28 years, leading an array of trips all designed to help people further understand the remarkable diversity and beauty of nature, and our place within it. His most recent book is Our Living Ancestors: The History and Ecology of Old-Growth Forests in Wisconsin (and where to find them)

John won the 2006 Ellis/Henderson Outdoor Writing Award from the Council for Wisconsin Writers for his book Graced by the Seasons: Spring and Summer in the Northwoods. He has served on the Board of Trustees for the Wisconsin Nature Conservancy, the Wisconsin Humanities Council, and the River Alliance of Wisconsin. He currently serves on the Board of the Northwoods Land Trust, and the Board for the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame.

John and his wife, fiber artist Mary Burns, live on the Manitowish River in Iron County where they raised two daughters.

The Scheig Center was constructed in 1998 with a design based on the Wisconsin-born architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, by Taliesin Architects. Surrounding the 5,658 square foot Scheig Center is 35 acres of park land dedicated to a variety of gardens, trails, ponds, and other green spaces.
