Checklist Project

The Wisconsin Checklist Project is a cooperative project between WSO and the Department of Natural Resources (WDNR).

Purpose: Monitor annual, seasonal, and geographic changes in abundance of Wisconsin birds. Volunteers record all species observed during regular birding activities during a single week in a single county on standardized computer readable forms. Nearly 75,000 checklists have been submitted since the beginning of the project in 1983.

When: Year-round.

Commitment: Variable. Some volunteers have submitted weekly checklists for over 10 years while others have participated for a few weeks, months, or years.

Skills: Ability to identify most Wisconsin species is desirable; however, less skilled observers can also contribute by recording those species they can confidently identify.

Logistics: Survey instructions and data forms are provided.

Equipment: Volunteers provide their own transportation and optical equipment.
